THE NEW HEBRIDES.

THE COMMISSIONER'S CHARGES. ALLEGATIONS ANSWERED. "Received November 28, 10.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, November 28. Allegations made against Presbyterian missionaries in the New Hebrides by Sir EJ£F. im Thurn, High Commissioner ot the Western Pacific, have been answered in a lengthy letter which the Foreign Missions Committee has requested Mr Deakin, Federal Prime Minister, to forward to the Secretary of State for the ■Colonies. The committee assert that the missionaries have tried to strengthen the bonds between Australia and the New Hebrides, and urge the Secretary for the Colonies '.o thoroughly investigate the commissioner's charges. (In a recent report the High Commissioner stated, among other things, that "these Presbyterian missionaries have been so long established in the islands, unchecked by anything representing the lay government, that they may, to some extent, feel themselves the ruling power in the islands; and they are inclined, more or less, to resent not merely authority, but even the existence of any lay government. They especially resent the gradual growth of French influence, and were it not for the hope of combatting this, so-ne #t least of them would, I believe, endeavour to ignore English Government authority.'.'
