On Monday evening next a social is tendered by the members off the fotara Lodge, Carterton, to Brc C. Billman. Mr D. McDonald has been appointed honorary piper to the Martinborough Caledonian SocietyDean McKenna, of Masterton, pre>j sided over a theological conference of Roman Catholic priests of [ Well Deanery at Otaki. I The death occurred at Wodonga, Victoria, last week, of Mr William i Huon, almost the last of the pioneers iof the Southern Riverina. Mr Huon was the grandson, of Gabriel de Uxilleau/a French Royalist of noble birth, who fled from his country, and landed in Australia with Captain John McArthur in 178(i. The sons of this refugee were the. first men to take up land on the Victorian side of the Murray. Mr .William Huon's widow is a niece of Hamilton Hume,, the first explorer of the Upper Mur- *, ray river. Mrs. Ella Wheeler Wilcox, the American poetess, in a letter, to Mr George Austin, of Auckland, has expressed her intention of visiting New Zealand within the next two years. Mr and Mrs Wilcox are spending this winter in the Hawaiian Islands. Mr J. Watson,, of who has been seriously ill for some weeks, is reported to be improving, in health. Mr A. Matthews, of. Waiorongomai,, has been elected chairman of theFeatherston County Council. The Rev. B. H. Ginger, of Carterton', who is at present on a trip to> England, intends lecturing there on, New Zealand..
