Commander, San Jose, Bonnie D.oon, Caran, Vinco. L ASHBURTON RACES. ASHBURTON, November 27. The Ashburton Trotting Club's spring meeting opened to-day in dull weather. There was a fairly good attendance and additional interest was manifested in the meeting owing to the fact that it was the ' first to be held under the Gaming | Amendment Act. A number of. bookmakers were on the ground, and plied their calling, the club deciding at a special meeting, held on the ground, to fix the license fee at five guineas per day for, the meeting. The Act states that no license shall be issued to persons otherwise than those known to be reputable men. The amended Act also states that bookmakers shall not be permitted to have a clerk and some difficulty was experienced in making distinctions. A number of bookmakers, who were not licensed and have been convicted for betting in Christchurch, were ordered off the ground.
