Owing to the high price of fowl feed many farmers in the Nelson district are sending poultry to Wellington for sale by public auction. With respect to hemp, the London ■quotation for "goedfair" on spot is .£3O, as compared with £36 10s a year •ago, and for January-March shipments £2B 10s, against £36. Fair • current Manila is quoted at £29 10s, while a year ago was as high as ■£42. Several dead ifnro's were found on •a farm in the Cambridge district last week, having; been shot by a person l using a pea-rifle. That lucerne is a profitable crop in ■suitable soil is evidenced by an instance that comes from Christchurch, -where £2O an acre for four acres was offered and refused for the right to cut the growing crop this season. Considerable quantities of green fodder are carted into Christchurch daily, and lucerne is greatly in demand for these requirements, especially as it can be cut three or four times in a season. During last year fifty-six students were enrolled at the Lincoln Agricultural College. The nurnoer of students in residence at any one time, however, was less than fifty-six, for the reason that the accommodation at the College allows only of fifty as a maximum; but as some left during the year and the vacancies resulting were promptly filled by other applicants, the attendance ranged throughout the year at or near tho limit of accommodation. Do you wish to know how to make whitewash? Slake one bushel, of fresh lime with hot water. While slaking add one pound of glue previously dissolved in warm water and stir thoroughly. Before applying add sufficient blueing to give the tint desired. The whitewash is good for both inside and outside work. Chatting with a Manawatu Herald reporter.. Mr Simms, Government pomologrst, said he regretted to state that there was laxity shown among orchard growers in protecting fruit trees against ojfahard pests, and was of opinion tha"-the onl;, effective measure would be to prosecute in order to make examples. He stated that three colonies of the enemy of the codlin moth had been liberated in the Manawatu. Small quantities of the same can be procured from the Department on application. Experiments are of more value to the farmer when practising on his own farm than at the experiment stations. A sovereign expended-on the farm in that manner on tmall plots will be money well invested, which may return fifty-fold in the future. Farming should not be one sicei. If you have all your eggs in one basket, you, perhaps, cannot save them, even if you do watch the basket, and to use more than one basket you must have more than one egg. A somewhat serious position faces those who have to use horses in connection with their business, on account of the high price of oats and chaff at present obtaining prices which will in all probability remain at their present abnormal height for some time. Last year (says an exchange), oats were selling at from 3s to 3s 3d per bushel, while this year they are selling at from 4s"6d to ss. Chaff, which was sold at from £5 to £6 per ton last year, is now quoted at £7 10s per ton.
