; CARLTON A v. CARTERTON

A match was commenced on No. 1 wicket on the Park Oval, on Saturday, between the Carlton A and Carterton teams. Carterton won the toss, and they were first represented by Smart and Hart, Hoar and Allen taking up the bowling. The batsmen soon settled down to work, and rattled jfrp 21 before Darvill caught Smart off Allen. Welch joined Hart, but Allen bowled the latter when the score had reached 28. Beechey and Welch made a useful stand, butting on 20 runs before Congdon bowled Welch, who had compiled 21 by hard hitting. Beechey and W. Gallon were responsible for another useful partnership, 60 being put up before Waters found Beechey's weak spot. Feist had a short and merry innings, and Fairbrother added 3 to the score. Seventy-six was up when Elliott joined W. Gallon, who was playing nice cricket. The pair carried the score to 92 before Elliott was bowled by Congdon. The remaining Datsmen took the score to 111. W. Gallon was not out with a well-compiled 35 to his credit. Carterton batted with ten men. Congdon came out with the best bowling average, taking 4 wickets for 26. The bowling material in the team was not utilised to the best advantage. Allen was taken off at his ■Bevonth over and this was a mistake. His last five overs read—wickets, 2; runs, 7; maidens, 2. In his first four overs he bowled somewhat indifferently, but got Hart with a beautiful" ball in the next over and then began to find his length, and sent down some real "stingers." Allen should have been kept on and C Migdon or Barlow replaced Hoar, who, up till now, had had 20 runs hit off him without securing a wicket. Certainly Hoar bowled well, but he had no luck, and a change at his end would probably have been of the utmost service. The Carlton team, as usual, fielded well, Boyd being particularly brilliant. Carlton commenced their innings disastrously, and finished up disastrously. The ' Carferton bowling was very weak; in fact only up to first-class junior form. The only batsman who gave a decent • display was Swan, who played correct • cricket for 14 runs. The rest of the batting may be termed fair to me- ■ dium. The innings closed for 82, and Carlton's failure to have scored • at least double this total is inexplic- . able. Carterton resumed their second innings about half an hour before the • call of time, and knocked up 33 for the loss of no wickets. The bowling was in the hands of Waters and Bell, whereas Barlow should certainly have been entrusted with the boll at one - end. The following were the . scores: — CARTERTON.—First Innings.
