Mr W. G. John, general secretary of the Theosophical Society of Australia, has received a letter from Mrs Besant, stating that she intends to visit Australia in the middle of next year.
On Tuesday evening: the members of the Featherston Glee Club and Orchestra presented Dr. Palmer, the conductor, with a handsome silver cigar case as a mark of esteem. Mr S. E. Wright wrote (o the meeting of the managers of the Technical School, last evening, resigning his position as instructor of the commercial and carving classes, cwing to his early departure for Napier. The resignation was accepted, and the managers expressed their regret at losing the services of such a valuable instructor as Mr Wright.
The members of the choir of St. Matthew's Church entertained Mr Proctor and Miss Digby, members of the choir, who are leaving Masterton for Wellington and Hastings, respectively, at a farewell supper in St. Matthew's schoolroom last evening. The Rev. A. M. Johnson presided over the gathering, and while eulogising the services of their departing friends, wished them every future prosperity. Vocal item were contributed by Misses Elkins, Fuller, V. Edwards and Read, Masters Jepson and La Roche. The arrangements for the function, which was of a very pleasant nature, were carried out by Mrs Sutton, and Misses Read and Fuller.
Mr C. E. Darnell entertained his employees and their families at a dinner in the Foresters' Hall, last evening. The hall was tastefully decorated, and the whole proceedings passed off very successfully. About 200 guests sat down to an excellent repast. After the dinner the evening was given up to toasts and musical items. ;The toast of the "The, Host" was proposed by Mr F. W. Temple, and Mr Daniell, in his reply, gave a brief but interesting narrative of his travels. Those who contributed to the musical programme were Miss W. Daniell, Mrs Inns and Messrs S. J. Johnston, H. Inns, L. Daniell and H. Collins. At the conclusion of the programme the hall was cleared, and dancing wa3 indulged in until about midnight. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a highly enjoyable evening to a conclusion. The Wellington Education Board has extended the leave of Miss A. J. Stanton, of the Dalefield school, till the end of the year. Mr P. C. Freeth, of Palmerston North, who has been on a tour of the world, is expected to return home on Wednesday next.
