ALLEGED ARSON. By Telegraph—Press Association. TAIHAPE, November 16. At the Police Court, Robert Burt, a well-known axeman, was committed for trial for alleged arson. The evidence showed that accused's watch and chain were found on a sledge, and tin of kerosene was re r moved to a washhouse bearing bloodstains. There is a wound in the back of accused's hand, and a doctor certified that it could not have been inflicted by a knife or a bottle. The accused said he fell on a bottle.
OPENING OF A FLAX MILL. PALMERSTON N., Nov. 17. A new flax-mill at Makenia, near Shannon, was opened by the Seifert Company, on Saturday, in the presence of the Hons.R. McNab, T.Duncan and other members of Parliament and, representative business men. Speeches were delivered by Messrs McNab, Duncan, , Greenslade, Lawry, Hone Heke, Field, and Hogg congratulating the company on their magnificent enterprise. The mills are the largest in the dominion, and are' equipped with modem machinery and every convenience for 150 workers. FOUND DEAD. WANGANUI, November 17. George William Bell, a baker, aged about 47, was found dead on the river bank this morning. The deceased, who was a sufferer from heart disease, had been to the public baths with his son a short time before his death. DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 17. A patient named James Robertson died under chloroform at the hospital on Friday night. Roberton, who was a middle-yged man, was admitted to the hospital suffering from an internal obstruction, and an operation was commenced shortly after ten o'clock. The anaesthetic was administered in the usual way, and the operation proceeded successfully and was almost finished when the patient's heart fluttered and stopped. Efforts to restore the heart's action proved unavailing. An inquest was held, last night; and a verdict was returned that death was due to shock following an operation.
