THE PAY OF CLERKS.

By Telegraph—Parliamentary Correspondent. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. In the House of Representatives, this afternoon, Mr Ell asked the Minister of Labour whether his attention had been drawn to the statements of clerks, published in the Dominion, of 31st October, that the average wages of clerks employed in insurance companies were £1 5s to .£'2 per week; and, if so, will the Minister consider the advisability of introducing legislation next session fixing a minimum wage for clerks? To this the Hon. Mr Millar replied that it appears hopeless to try to do anything for clerks. Legislation had been brought forward to try to help them, and they had petitioned by hundreds that their relations with their employers should not be disturbed.
