EXPLOSION ON A LAUNCH.
FOUR MEN INJURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. RQTORUA, November 11. A serious accident occurred on the oil launch Pakefaa, belonging to Duncan Steele, on Lake Rotorua, last night, at 8 o'clock, as the launch was returning from Lake Rotoiti. The engine had not been working well for some time, and Steele went to examine it. having a lamp in his hand. No sooner had he opened the engineroom door than an explosion took place. Steele, Mead, Isles and Goodson were badly burned. The boat caught fire and all the deckhouse was burned. Steele was badly burned about the hands, legs a.nd head; Mead was badly burned about the hands and face; Isles suffered injury to his face, and Goodson's injuries were slight. The accident happened midway between the wharf and Mokoia Island. A. E. Kusabs, with the launch Alexandra, went to render assistance, and the fire was subdued by the time the boat reached the wharf. Mead is at present in the sanatorium ; the others went to their homes.
