PERSONAL.
Mr D. Johnstone, Collector of Customs, who has been on a business visit to Masterton, returned to Wellington yesterday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Tremain were entertained at a valedictory social at Pahiatua on Monday evening. The Mayor presented Mr Tremain with a purse of sovereigns on behalf of the residents of Pahiatua. The death occurred in the Pahiatua Hospital, on Wednesday last, of Mrs Mason, wife of Mr Walter Mason, of Nireaha. The deceased was 46 years of age. Mr A. H. Turner has been appointed head teacher at the Mauriceville School, and Miss M. A. Johnson has been appointed to a like position at the Waterfalls School. Mr A. D. Gillies, the newlyappointed abattoir manager, at Masterton, arrived from Blenheim yesterday to take up his duties. Mr C. Aston, who has been acting inspector at the abattoir, will leave for Woodville this morning.
