MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee was held last evening. There were present:—Crs Pauling (chairman), Morris, Prentice, Pragnell and Haughey. Mr A. R. Bunny waited on the committee and suggested that the Council should pipe in a. natural water course between Bunny's Road and Hogg Crescent into which the public and private owners have a right of drainage m order that he may fill in the hollow ground along the line of the hollow water course, and so make the surrounding land suitable for building purposes. It was resolved to recommend that without prejudice permission be given to Mr Bunny to pipe in the water course with a six-inch pipe subject to the v/ork being done to the satisfaction of the Council, and that if subsequently it is found that the Council have no prescriptive right to drain into the water ,course, the Council will re-imburse Mr Bunny of the expense of laying the six-inch pipe. It was resolved to recommend that the application of the Acclimatisation Society for a water service for cleansing purposes at the fish hatch • eries be granted. A motion was passed recommending the Council to remove the tar boiler at the gasworks to the Hope Street tar shed for Hie purpose of manufacturing tar macadam, and that tenders be called for the work of removal. The acting-To.wn Clerk was instructed to attend to the matter of insuring the Council's property in all cases where insurances are necessary. Applications from Mr L. Devonport, borough carter, and Mr W. Davidson, borough ranger, for increases in salary were referred to the Engineer to report. Having regard to the necessity which always exists during periods of dry weather for gre/it care being exercised in the conservation of the public water, and to the fact that certain inhabitants of the borough are known to be using public water in a manner regardless of the needs of the community as a whole, the committee decided to recommend the Council that public notice be given; calling the attention of the citizens and others to the conditions under which water is supplied, *md the by-laws regulating the use thereof, and intimating that in the interests (3f the community jegal proceedings will be instituted whenever it is found that water is being used contrary to the by-laws. In answer to an enquiry by the managing director of a certain wool company as to whether the Council are prepared to sell or lease part of the borough freehold, the committee recommended the Council to intimate that they would be prepared to do so subject to satisfactory conditions being arranged.
