EXPERIMENTAL DAIRY FARM
QUESTION OF SITE SETTLED. PALMERSTON NORTH SELECTED. For the past two or three years the establishment of a Dairy School has v been a burning question with the ugrieultursl community. The need tor such an institution has been long reeognisedjr&a the strenuous competition that New' Zealand butter and cheese have to meet on the Home market, imposes upon the dairy farmer and the factory manager a stricter attention to quality and economy, that only experimental and scientific method can possibly ensure. The farmer muat be instructed in all the requirements of modern dairying. The Government has kept this matter in view during the period, and the r-iiief question has been with this, as with othar innovations, where to establish the experimental station ail dairying school. Taranaki, as pioneer in the dairy industry, h :j: vory strong claims to urge, and Ilawera, Elthatn, Stratford, and New Plymouth have all clamoured for the s -iujol, each one expiating on its several advantages over the others. The distance from the capital has be-jii deomed a considerable drawback to the demands of the first home of th'.> cow, and Fielding, Palmerston N u-th, and Levin have all been suggested and advocated as suitble sites. It may be stated at last, say? the Pout, that the battle of the sites is ovur. The greatest agricultural centre of the North Island, the Mecca of the farmer, with its great shows in the winter and the one just over in spring, Palmerston North, has been selected as the site of the dairy school .-;o long in the air, but now at last sottled on solid grounds.
