NOTES ON THE RACING. HOW THE DERBY WAS WON. By Zetland. By Telegraph. CHRISTCHURCH, November 4. The attendance on Derby Day was very large, although the number of people present was less than on Saturday. The Derby was generally voted a very open race. Outlander was scratched, leaving eight well-con-ditioned colts to go to the post. Gold Crest was made a very strong favourite, and when the horses lined up to the barrier he unseated his rider and galloped away from the course. He was soon caught and remounted, an'! when the barrier tapes went up he was first out. He cut out the running right round the back .stretch, closely attended by Bonny Glen and The Rand. Entering the straight Elevation moved up, and Dawn made a forward move. A most exciting race down the straight resulted in Elevation beating Gold Crest by a clear length, with Bonny Glen a close third. As the horses passed the post the excitement was intense and on returning to the scale thousands cheered the winner, and the victory was one of the most popular yet recorded at Riccarton. ■ Mr W. E. Bidvvill was present to see his colt win, and was heartily congratulated by many of the leading sportsmen of the dominion. Nine faced the barrier for the Metropolitan Handicap, and Mahuta on his good race in the Cup was installed a very solid favourite. He behaved badly at the post, but on the despatch was quickly to the front. He led as on Saturday right round, and well into the straight, where Master Delaval, Apa and Seal Rock fought the issue out. The first-named won by a neck from Apa with Seal Rock close up third. A feature of the day's racing was the riding of the Wairarapa jockey, S. Reid, who scored on Full Rate, Elevation and Saga. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. By, Telegraph- Press Association.
