LAWN TENNIS.

OPENING OF THE SEASON. ] The official opening of the tennis season in Masterton took place on Saturday afternoon last, when the Masterton Tennis Club's Courts were thrown open to members and their friends. Favoured by splendid weather a large number of members and visitors were in attendance, adding: quite an animated appearance to the club's picturesquely situated grounds. Afternoon tea provided by the club, and liberally dispensed by a number of the lady members, was much appreciated by those present. Thanks to the ilub's groundsman, Mr F. the courts were in good condition, and give every indication of becoming more so as the season advances. A ladder competition has been arranged, players classified, and the ladder framed, and doubtless ladder matches will now be the order of the day. A challenge has already been issued and accepted for the second "rung." Entries for a handicap singles competition will be received up to Saturday, November oth. A match with the Thorndon Club will be played here on Saturday, 9th, or Monday, 11th, most probably the former date. About 20 new members have been proposed for membership, and it is evident that the game is now going to boom in Maserton.
