A representative of Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea merchant, has arrived here. He states that as a result of the imposition of duty on packet teas Sir T. Lipton intends establishing a blending and packing factory in Sydney, which will be the finest equipped factory in the world. DISORDERLY MEMBERS. Received November 1, 9.21 a.m. SYDNEY, November 1. A "scene" occurred in the Legislative Assembly, two membersMessrs Nielson and Stuart Robinson —being removed for refusing to obey the Chairman's ruling. NEWCASTLE COLLIERY TROUBLES. ■ FAILURE OF THE CONFERENCE. Received November 1, 9.21 a.m. SYDNEY, November 1. The conference between the coal owners and miners resulted in a deadlock. The meeting abruptly broke up. The owners intimated that in the present conditions of the coal trade it was impossible to raise prices beyond eleven shillings a ton, and they declined to advance the hewing rate more than fourpence or to concede the other demands. The miners will meet to-morrow to discuss the situation. Both sides profess great firmness. POPULATION OF NEW SOUTH v WALES. SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. Received November 1, 10.34 a.m. SYDNEY, November 1. The population of New South Wales has increased by 36,450 during the past nine months, The quarter's netgaia included 801 from New Zealand.
WRECKED TRANSPORT SOLD. Received November 1, 10.34 a.m. SYDNEY, November 1. The wreck of the French transport Meurthe, which, after being abandoned at sea, was washed ashore at Lord Howe Island, has been resold to the original purchasers for £525. The islanders will receive £3OO salvage money. INCREASE IN WHARF LABOURERS' WAGES. Received November 1, 10.45 a.m. SYDNEY, November 1. Wharf labourers from to-day will receive twopence per hour advance in their overtime rates. TATTERSALL'S SWEEPS. A TAX STAMP DISPUTE. Received November 2, 1.9 a.m. HOBART, November 1. A dispute, involving over £50,000, is being considered by the Government in connection with TattersalL's sweeps. In October, 1904, a Lottery Act was passed providing for the payment of a twopenny stamp tax on all 5s lottery tickets or fraction of ss. The tax was passed on by Tattersail's to the purchaser of tickets, and the ticket? had a face value of 5s 2d printed on them. The Crown law', officers express the opinion that the 2d was a fraction of ss, and therefore the tax should be fourpence.
