DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR.

The Journal of the Department of Labour for November contains the following in reference to Mastertcn, Tinui and Greytown:— Masterton.—Trade generally during the past month has been to the standard, but money is still reported as being very "tight." As stated in previous reports the building trade in all branches is extremely good. There is a decided improvement in the millinery and dressmaking trades, and a successful season is anticipated. Building trades: Still very satisfactory in all branches. Furniture trades: Good business generally reported; all hands fully employed. General blacksmithing: Busy. Sash and door-making: All hands fully employed. Sadd'.ery: Fair business only. Moulding continues good. Coach-building: Brisk with indications of continuance. Engineering: Very busy. Millinery and dress-making: Improving rapidly. Tailoring: Still improving; a little overtime has been worked during the month. | Unskilled labour: During the past month the supply has been greater than the demand, consequently employment could not befound locally for all the applicants. Of the sixteen who applied for work seven were sent to private employment. Greytown.—Building trades: Fairly busy. Unskilled labour: Local labourers complain that work in the locality is more scarce than usual at this time of the year. The wet season experienced is no doubt the cause of this. t Tinui.— Building trades: Local carpenters have been doing very little work during the month. There are no buildings in course of erection. Retail tade: A fair trade has been doing in all branches during the month, and this should improve when shearing is in full swing. Unskilled labour: All local men have been fairly well employed during the month at sheep work, fencing, ploughing, scrub-felling and at roadwork. No swaggers were seen on the road during the month, except those who had been working at scrubfelling and roadwork, and who were going to shearing, which has now started in a few sheds in this district. This has given employment to several'men from various parts of the dominion. * 'i
