MAURICEVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday last. There were present —Crs F. W. H. Kummer (chairman), H. J. Dagg, and J. E. Perry. Considerable correspondence was dealt with, but chiefly of a routine nature, and of little public interest. The County Ranger wrote, in reply to the Council's request, explaining in reference to signatures in his book, that some of the persons whose stock he found straying on the roads refused to sign the book when he brought such stock to them, as directed by the Council. This arrangement was made by the Council for the purpose of relieving the persons referred to of part of the driving fees they would otherwise have to pay, but as, apparently, this is not appreciated by some, it was resolved that, in future, the ranger in such cases shall drive the straying stock to the pound without going out of his way to deliver them up to the owners. I It was resolved to appoint Mr J. Goodgame to be caretaker of the yards at the County Office, with authority to prevent any person opening the gates and putting horses or ' other stock in, or removing timber or other materials without the Council's consent.' The overseer reported that he had, as instructed, examined the pegs at the metal" pits recently surveyed, and found that some were of totara, some rimu, and in one case merely an T> ordinary wire nail. He stated that the road in Mr Sheath's care was in a very bad condition and needed immediate attention. On the Mangamahoe Road, J. Anderson had carted only two and a half days, so that little progress had been made with the metalling repairs. The part of this road from McDonald's to Ihuraua is very bad, but nothing can be done until the weather improves. In connection with Dagg's Road, it will take three men three weeks to make it fit for wheel traffic to Oliver's; with fine weather it may be done in 16SS 111X16 It was resolved that the Cleric should get the balance sheet printed as soon as it is certified by the Audi-tor-General. Various notifications of elections of Hospital Trustees, etc., were received and dealt with. Cr Dagg was appointed to represent the Council at the election of Masterton Hospital Trustees and the District Hospital Board. It was resolved to make fresh arrangements in reference to the insurance of employees against accident. r_ Accounts amounting to £233 16s * ,h were passed for payment.
