CALEDONIAN PIPE BAND.
Considerable surprise has been expressed at various times that such a large and influential body as the Wairarapa Caledonian Society had not before now establised a pipe band in connection with their institution. A Caledonian Society without a pipe band may be likened unto a ship without a rudder. The principal object for which the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was formed was to keep alive the Scotch customs and games in the Wairarapa, and the absence of a pipe band in connection with that body has been commented upon times out of number. What appeals more to the patriotic Scot, sixteen thousand miles from his "ain native heather" than the "skirl of the bagpipes?" The Society has now the decided to encourage the formation of a pipe band, and its action will meet with the approval of all 1 Scotchmen in the district. The project is sure to be well supported, and there is no reason why the Wairarapa Caledonian Pipe Band should not, in a short time, be equal to any in the dominion. The day may not be far distant when we shall see the Waivarapa Caledonian Pipe Band competing in contests against the redoubtable Southland and Otago Pipe Bands, as a number of good players have joined that band. It is perhaps just as well to make it clear that the pipe band, although a separate institution, will be affiliated to the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, though governed by its own rules.
