WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the meeting of the Wairarapa > SflpUh County Council held on Satur"Hayrabt, at Carterton, the Engineer reported as follows: — Belvedere Riding.— The grader has been working filling in ruts and spreading metal on Norfolk, Chester., Brooklya and Hinau Gully Roads. General.repairs have been made on Belvedere, Hinau Gully and Main Koad North. The approach to White Bridge, Bijfeedere Road, which had scoured osts has been repaired by building one new wing, and refilling the approach with netted boulders. The willows on the upper side of the bridge nave been felled, and are being used to give the water a better course through the bridge. The bank of the river above the bridge will need protection to keep the water from cutting through on to the road. I have inspected the place with Cr Moore, and would recommend tha* two short groins he put in. At the Mangaterere Valley Bridge one of the old protective groins was broken by the floods, and 1 have had this and some stone work at the eastern approach repaired. Booth's Road. Upper Belvedere, which was used for a tramline, has been left in a bad state, all the old formation and sleepers being still left on the road. The disused tramline on Mangaterere Valley Road is being pulled up, and * the road put in order by Booth and Co. Councilloi Stevens and I inspected the drain on Brooklyn, and arranged to put in a pipe drain to the River Mangaterere, the Council to supply the pipes, and Messrs Ashton and Mackenzie the labour. Tenders have been called for metalling Manning's Road. Parkvale Riding.—-The metalling on the main road at Hurunui-o-rangi .has bean completed. The narrow iportion through the swamp on Hughes' Road has been widened, and ifche drains cleaned. The bad holes on the Kokotau Flat have been patched, and tenders have been called for metalling this road. General repairs Jiave been made on the Kokotau Road, flAo-» Nix's Road. 1 would call theTCouncil's attention to the deep drains on the East Tara'ahi Road. These drains on such a narrow road are becoming dangerous, and as they are cleaned from time to time -they are gradually encroaching on the road. I would suggest that before more money is spent in clearing them an endeavour should be made to get them closed'and put back on to the adjoining properties. I would recommend that tenders be called for metalling 29 chains at the end of this road and a portion of the cutMtijjkb a total of about 380 cubic yards, the Ruamahanga rivpr. Also for metalling an additional length of about 28 chains on the Kokotau Hill; metal to come from the Para Road pit about 230 cubic yards. I inspected the river banks at the Kokotau Bridge with Councillor Perry, and 1 have since seen Mr 4 Snell, on whose property the river is encroaching, and have arranged with him to assist in what work the Council may have done at the place. The contract for repairing stop bank on the properties of Messrs Eaton and Herrick has now been completed. Tenders have been called for metalling the road across the Kokotau Flat. Dalefield Riding.—The grader has been working on Waterson's Line, Dalefield Road and Judd's Road, raking in ruts.. Patching and general repairs have been done on Waterson's line and Victoria Road. Owing to the large amount of wet weather slow progress has been made with j the milling contract on Hodder's Road, but there are now only ,about fifty yards remaining to be put out. At the Waiohine Bridge I have had to put in a considerable amount of i protective works. The river at pre- ] sent is strikng very hard, against the , northern end of the bridge, and further works are urgently needed. Ow- | iug to the urgent nature of the work, I have been unable to arrange for a meeting of the sub-committees of the two Councils before putting the work in hand." Owing to the large number of freshes in the Waiohine and Mangaterere Rivers 1 have been unable «to put in the concrete culvert on the main road, and this work will now probably have to be held over until after the rush of traffic about race and show time. Tenders have been called for metalling contracts on Waihakeka and Hilton Roads. Maungaraki Riding.— General repairs have been made on the main Carterton-Kaiwhata Road, on Flat Point Road, Gladstone-Masterton and Gladstone-Longbush Roads. Men are now engaged clearing slips and opening water tables, etc., on the Admiral Road, eastern side; and on the , Eringa Road. At Tupurupuru satisfactory progress is being made with the two contracts; and I have pegged the portion of the road beyond the bridge for ploughing and grading. The slips have been cleared on the Ahiaruhe Road, and the water tables on this road and Ponatahi Road ?re being opened. I have inspected the Ahiaruhe Road with a view to metalling, and find that to the unmetalled used portions of _JqiMfrad witn 15 y artls P er ehain wwmlcost £54. Tenders have been called for two metalling contracts on the ~Te Wharau-Flat Point Road.
