RACING.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Received October 28, 11.15 a.m. FLEMINGTON, October 28. The chief track work this morning was confined to half-mile flutters. Mountain King left that distance behind in 49sec, Tartan in 52sec, Melodrama in 52sec, Tangaroa in 53sec, and Master Foote in 53sec. May King is hopelessly amiss. Received October 28, 8.25 p.m. MELBOURNE, October 28. May King has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. The suggested inquiry into ths running of the Caulfield Cup has been allowed to fall through. To-day's quotations for the Melbourne Cup are:— Five to 2 against Apologue, 7 to 1 Tartan, 8 to 1 Poseidon, and Mountain King, 10 to 1 Mooltan and Welcome Trist, 16 to 1 Spinaway. THE TOTALISATOR. By Telegraph-Press Association. AUCKLAND, October 28. \ It appears that legally not more than three .totalisator machines can be used in connection with any race meeting, but this law has been repeatedly broken both by the Auckland and Avondale Racing Clubs, the impression being that as only one dividend was declared there was no breech of the law. In the Police Court, to-day, the Avondale Jockey Club and the secretary (Mr H. Hayr) were separately charged with using three machines in excess of the law on each day of the last race meeting. The offence was admitted. As very short notice had been given, the Magistrate did not impose any penalty beyond the payment of costs. TURF NOTES. (By Zetland). The handicaps for the TaratahiCarterton meeting, on November 9tl and 11th, compiled by Mr Ulic Shannon, should be well received b\ owners and trainers, and will probably be followed by satisfactorj acceptances. Mataari, the winner o: the Masterton Cup, has been awardec the post of honour in the County Cup with 9st. Those that read well foi this event are Douche Bst 31b; Mora 7st 101b, Polyanthus 7st 10ib, anc Rosegrove 7st. I regard Douche as especially well in. In the Hack Handicap San Julie, 9st is handicapped t on her winning forrr Trentham form- and there is no rea son why he should not—he shoulc •win the Hack Hurdles from end t( end, and with a true run Matakokir and Te Kainui could fill the places Strathcona 9st. Naphtha Bst and Syl van Park look a likely trio to finis! in front in the King Edward Handi cap, and in the Gladstone Welter Truthful lOst 31b, Flingot lOst, anc Caelic 9st 71b should run well forward. The New Zealand Cup, the bhj event of the year, and one ,that has been engaging the attention oJ sportsmen throughout the dominior for several weeks, will be run or Saturday next. During the pasi fortnight the work accomplished a 1 Riccarton by Cup candidates has thrown a certain amount of light or their prospects, but at the same tim( the race must still be reckoned a verj open one. In order to have anj chance of success in such a race, i horse has to undergo a very search ing preparation, and it is in the course of work allotted towards this end that some succumb to the exig encies of training operations, whili others thrive and improve with gallop. Judging by the track reports , the horses that are doing well in th< winding-up work are Master Delaval Paritutu, Armistice, Mahuta, Apa Buccleugh, Elevation, and Probable Maniapoto is reported as being toi big in condition to .show his bes form,Zimmerman's work is of an or dinary nature, Grand Slam strucl himself on Saturday, and may hav< to be eastd in his tasks for two o: three days, and St. Joe and Frisa have not been required to do long distance work. A rumour was cur rent yesterday that Elevation ha< struck himself and was causing hi trainer anxiety. Up till Saturda; last the most convincing work a Riccarton had been executed b: Master Delaval, Paritutu, Mahuta and Elevation, and over shorter dis tances Armistice, Apa, St. Joe, Buc cleugh, and Probable had acquittei themselves creditably. The fina payment of 10 sovs is to be mad< to-morrow night, when it is ex pected that about sixteen horses will remain in. Another open qu?stion is the rie cienn of the Stewards' Handicap, Those particularly fancied bj backers are Munjeet, King Billy Lord Soult, Fire Iron, Idealist, Lu pulite and Martello, and in a true run race they might finish in thi front rank. On account of his tw( wins at the Wellington meeting, Martello is a leading selection. Ui till yesterday Fire Iron had accomplished the most satisfactory track ■gallops, but several of the leading division had not been asked {o gc against the watch. The Canterbury Jockey Club has decided not to accept telegraphic investments for its Cup Meeting this year. The Daunt-Kestrel mare in R. Knox's stable has been named Manuriri, and Full Rate's brother will race as Over Rate.
