* —— Mr F. H. Wood, formerly of Masterton and now residing at Tauranga, i will leave in January next on a trip to Japan. The death is reported of Mrs Barnet Phelps, an old • resident of Wellington, at the ags of 62. Mr E. S. Maunsell, of Waihakeke, Carterton, is lying seriously ill in the Napier Hospital, and it is probable that he will have to undergo an operation. On Thursday last, at Waipukurau, Miss M. Young, daughter of Mr D. Young, of Waipukurau, was married to Mr F. J. Bassett, of Waipukurau. Mr J. Rose, eldest son of Mr Rose, of Mangatainoka, was married, last Thursday, to Miss J. Jupp, daughter •of Mr W. JupD, of Palmerston North. Mr W. F. Rolfe, Stationmaster at Port Chalmers, has been transferred to a similar position at Napier. Archdeacon Gould, of Oamaru, has belfeppointed to the new St. Paul's Cathedral at Dunedin, in succession ArchHpflcon Robinson. The death occurred at Dunedin, on Sunday, of Mr J. A. Kirby, a prominent Mason and bowler. A pleasant function took place at the Club Hotel, yesterday afternoon, when a large number of stock agents, representing the various firms doing business in Masterton, assembled to make a presentation f,o Mr A. lorns, of the staff'of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., who is to be married to-day. in presenting Mr lorns with a handsome travelling rug Mr 0. C. Cooper said the stock agents desired to show their appre- ■ ciation of Mr lorns in a small way, and to congratulate him upon his approaching marriage. He wished Mr lorns and his bride-elect prosperity and happiness in the future. Mr Jas. Ewart spoke in a similar strain. The health of Mr lorns was drunk with musical honours, after which the recipient suitably responded. Advantage was also taken of the opportunity to welcome Mr J. Ball, who recently arrived from Waverley to join the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. A number of toasts were honoured, and altogether a very pleasant hour was spent. , Mrs Bodil Marie Gronnebeck, an old settler of the Dannevirke district, died on Sunday last.
