CARTERTON.

(From Qur Own Correspondent.) Sunday. A meeting of the Carterton United Friendly Societies' Sports Committee was held in the Foresters' Hall, Carterton, on Friday night. There was a good attendance of members present, and Mr C. Reid was in the chair. It was decided to make application to the secretary of the Wairarapa Athletic Association for a permit to hold the sports on Boxing Day under their rules. The programme as drawn up by the programme committee was adopted. Mr R. Cooper, Gladstone, was appointed starter, and Mr W. Howard Booth marshall of horse events. The chairman reported that the A. and P. Association had granted permission to use the Showgrounds and that the sum of £2 would be charged for the use of same, which sum would be afterwards handed over to the Fire Brigade. A committee consisting of Messrs A. Petersen, F.. Jackson, G. Stove and M. Davidson, was appointed to can vass the town for donations. The secretary was instructed to write to the secretary of the New Zealand Axemen's Association for informaconnection with chopping and sawing events. A meeting of those interested in the formation of an orchestral- suciety in Carterton was held at Mr J. Brown's private residence on Friday evening. It was decided to form an society, and to elect Mr ~~ ~ Harvey secretary and treasurer. _ A committee was appointed, consisting of Misses Petersen and Berrill, and Messrs Brown, Goldsmith, Crawley, Simpson and Madsen. It was decided to call the society "The Carterton Orchestral Society." Sixteen cases of scarlet fever are reported to have occurred in Carterton during the past week. On account ' of the prevalence of the disease no services were held at the Anglican and Methodist Sunday Schools yesterday. It is probable that the Carterton District High School will be closed for a few days owing to a large number of children being absent. The Chief Health Officer will arrive in Carterton to-morrow, and will arrange for the fumigation of all public buildings.
