MASTERTON RACES.

OPENING DAY. MATAARI WINS THE CUP. For the opening day of their spring meeting the Masterton Racing Club were favoured with splendid weather. The summer-like weather in- , duced a large number of people to visit the course. The course and its environments were in splendid order, and the general appearance of the i enclosure reflected the greatest credit on the custodian, Mr H. Welch. The running track was in good order after the recent spell of settled weather, and consequently some very fast times were registered. Taken all through the racing was interesting, and in two or three instances, notably ir. the Ladies' Bracelet, the finishes were very exciting. There were large fields for each event. There were no accidents or protests during the clay. The amount put through the totalisator was £B,IBO, a record for the Club, and an increase of £1,663 over the amount put through the machine for the first day of the last spring meeting.
