DEAENESS OF FOOD. Received October 24, 10.4 a.m. SYDNEY, October 24. Owing to the clearness of food, the restaurant-keepers have decided to increase their tariff for meals. MR WATSON'S RETIREMENT. Received October 24, 10.4 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 24. Mr J. C.. Watson will retain hisseat for the session, and then retire altogether from Parliament. He states that there has been no friction between him and his party, and that his resignation is due entirely to private reasons. THE."WRECK OF THE ALFHILD. TERRIBLE SUFFERING OF THE CAPTAIN. DEATH FROM EXHAUSTION. - Received October 24, 10.4 a.m. HOBART, October 24. The captain of the Alfhild had worked his way through a most impenetrable jungle, and had then, in a state of delirium, fallen over a small embankment and cut his head. He was unable to rise, and died from exhaustion, due to starvation. The weather was bitterly cold, and the country flooded and rough at the scene of the wreck. THE MANILDRA FIRE. RESCUER DEAD. Mr Goodman's daughter, who was terribly injured in the fire at Manildra while endeavouring to rescue her sister, after saving three others, has succumbed to her injuries. HIDES MARKET. Received October 24, 9.27 p.m. MELBOURNE, October 24. There is a moderate supply of hides. Competitoin is good and prices are unchanged. PLAGUE OF GRASSHOPPERS. A TRAIN STOPPED. Received October 24, 9.27 p.m. SYDNEY, October 24, Swarms of grasshoppers at Narrabri blocked a train of empty trucks. After running some trucks back to the station, the engine was returning for the balance when the grasshoppers smothered the brakes, which refused to act. In consequence the engine collided with and smashed some of the trucks. RIFLE SHOOTING MEETING. Received October 24. 11.12 p.m. SYDNEY, October 24. At the Rifle Meeting, Cutler won the King's Prize. Received October 25, lam. SYDNEY, October 24. The first prize in the King's Match was worth £IOO. Linn, of Orange, filled the second place, and Sergeant Tatlow, of Britain, was third. The scores are not available tonight. . None of the New Zealanders were prominent. THE NEW. ZEALAND RIFLE TEAM. A COMPLAINT. ■' Received October 24, 9.27 p.m. MELBOURE, October 24. In the Senate, Mr Walker read a letter from the Manager of the New Zealand Rifle Team in Sydney, complaining that the New Zealanders were treated' differently to the British in the matter of railway passes and tent charges. Mr John Norton, annoyed by a remark made by. Mr Wood, threatened to shout Mr Wood down like a clog. There was considerable excitement till Mr Norton calmed down.
