ENCOURAGING VOLUNTEERING.
LADY PLUNKET'S ACTIVITY. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISrCHURCH, October 24. The visit of Her Excellency Lady Plunket, Honorary Colonel of the 2nd North Canterbury Mounted Regiment to the Regiment's Headquarters a 4; Culverden, is likely to result in much general good to the mounted volunteers by increasing the interest in them. That Lady Plunket is no ornament • al officer is shown by the keen interest fhe takes in the general work of the force which is marked by her latest action in presenting a handsome shield for competition among the mounted volunteers of the dominion. As Her Excellency is Hon. Colonel of a Canterbury Regiment she has asked that the first competition for the shield be held on a Canterbury ground; the locality of further compettiions to be settled later. It is suggested that the competition take place about March or April. The conditions of the contest will be framed by Colonel Davies, Inspector-General, and it is safe to say they will be of a service nature. As Her Excellency will be present at the competition it is expected a large entry will ensue.
