SOCIALISM AND ROBBERY.
VISCOUNT ST. ALDWYN'S VIEWS. Received October 22, 8.22 a.m. LONDON, October 21. Viscount St. Aldwyn (formerly Sir Michael Plicks-Beach, for many years Chan*fcllor of the Exchequer in Conservative Administrations), speaking at. Cheltenham, said the Government's excessive weakness had given Socialism its present prominence. His Lordship agreed that it was impossible to combat Socialism by mere negation and individualism, or i by the gospel of selfishness. Much that was advocated by Socialists, said the speaker, was pure robbery; and besides, the success of socialism would destroy the mainspring of individual enterprise —personal interest.
