Mr J. McLachlan. M.H.R. for Ashburion, is seriously ill. At a meeting of the Wellington Typographical Union, held on Satur- ' day night, Mr R. Slater, by a narrowmajority over Mr J. A. McCullough, was elected asf the union's representative on the Arbitration Court. Th.2 death is announced as having taken place at Johannesburg, on July 25th, of Miss Alice Edgar, from an affection heart. The deceased actress was well-known in New Zea-land,-having toured the Dominion as leading lady ofJPollard's Opera Company. About"six years ago Miss Edgar visited South Africa with Pollard's Opera Company, and at the termination of the tour retired from the stage and settled down in Johannesburg. Mr C. H. Pyke, teller in the Napier branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been promoted to the position of accountant in the Masterton branch, vice Mr R. H. Baillie. who has been promoted to the managership of ths Foxton branch. Mr Pyke will enter upon his new duties to-day. Under date, September 6th, a London correspondent writes:—Mr H. G. Grove 3, ot Masterton, who came to England by the lonic last May, returned to London this 'week from a visit to the Dublin Horse Show, which he enjoyed very much. He leaves again shortly for the Isle of Wight and Cornwall, after which his movements are uncertain, the date of lib departure for New Zealand not yet being fixed. Mr Grove's object in coming to England was to meet his sister, who had come some months earlier to consult a medical arid who underwent a seri- , ous in Glasgow. After a somewhat slow recovery she is now completely restored to health. At tl e end of July when well enough to travel, sh? accompanied her brother to Leicester and thence to London, and they will travel together back to New Zealand, leaving here probably in November. Guard Allen, who has been lying seriously ill in the Wellington Hospital, was much better yesterday. Mr Williams, cadet in the Wellington Post Office, has been transferred to the Masterton office, and will take up his new duties in the telegraph operating room to-day. Mr and Mrs McGilvary, who some months ago left Carterton on a trip to the Old Country, are returning to the Dominion, and will arrive in Carterton on or about October 20th. Mr J. Archer, of the Railway Department, left Clareville, yesterday morning, for Wanganui on his annual leave oi.atsence. Mr Harold Wallace, who was amongst party of seven who were at Whangape, on Sunday evening last, in the boating fatality, was attached to the local Post Office staff abrjkgpur years ago.
