NEWFOUNDLAND FISHERIES.
LONDON, October 16. Several newspapers blame Sir Robert Bond, the Newfoundland Premier, for refusing to assist Lord Elgin, Secretary of State for the Colonies, to frame a vivendi in connection with the Newfoundland fisheries.
The correspondence which has passed on the', subject shows remarkable obstinacy.
ANTI-MILITARISM

Incriminating passages in Dr. Liebknecht's pamphlet were read publicly in court, and the Socialists are scattering a report of the proceedings broadcast. (Dr. Karl Liebknecht was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment in a fortress for high treason in fomenting anti-militarism).
SOWERBY BRIDGE RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
Received October 17, 8.48 a.m. LONDON, October 16. There have been four deaths in connection with the Sowerby bridge accident. (The train was derailed, and smashed into a house. In addition to the killed, about thirty persons were injured.
PREFERENTIAL TRADE.

Canada contemplates preferential trade arrangements with Italy and Germany. The latter is willing to withdraw the surtax in order to meet Canada half-way if the Canadians desire.
THE GARIBALDIAN ARMY

The Italian Government has appropriated £40,000 for the benefit of survivors of the Garibaldian army, originally numbering 12,000. Already there are 24,000 applicants.
EARTHQUAKE SHOCK
Received October 18, 1.33 a.m. NEW YORK, October 17,
Seismographs in America, Liabach, and the Isle of Wight recorded, yesterday, an earthquake of extraordinary violence. The area affected is supposed to be somewhere in the Southern Atlantic.
