A NEW BRIDGE.
By Ttlegraph—Press Association. Ferro-concrete is rapidly taking the place of the old order of wooden bridges in Taranaki, and to-day, the Taranaki County Council opened with much eclat a new ferro-con-crete bridge over the Waiwakaiho River, replacing the puriri structure erected over fifty years ago. The new bridge is claimed to be the largest ferro-concrete traffic bridge in the Dominion. Since the inaugura» tion of the new policy of the Council in connection with bridge reconstruction the Council has built two steel bridges and nine ferro-concrete bridges. A comparison of the cost with steel is decidedly in favour of ferro-concrete and the cost of maintenance is reduced to a minimum. An interesting part of the ceremony was the driving across the bridge in a motor car of three old identities, who crossed the old structue fifty years ago in a bullock-day, then the principal mode of conveyance.
