BRITISH RAILWAYS TROUBLE.
A SUGGESTION. Received October 11, 9.i0 a.m. LONDON, October 10. Mr Ramsay Mac Donald, Labour M.P., suggests that if a settlement of the railways trouble is impossible, Sir Henry Campbell - Bannerman ought <o summon a special session of Parliament in order to avert a strike, and force the directors to submit to arbitration. Received October 11, 11.25 p.m. LONDON, October 11 The congress of the Amalgamated Railway Servants Society, with two dissentients, recommended State control of the Railways. Mr Richard <Bell declared that when nationalisation came thousands of railway men would suffer, because much surplus of labour would follow upon removal of competition. He concluded by championing the cause of private investors in railways, and making a bold stand again«t some of the confiscation ideas current. Subsequently the congress altered the resolution to read State ownership instead of. State control. The congress also adopted a resolution condemning the tendency among railways to penalise British trade by giving preferential rates to foreign producers and manufacturers.
