ASHBURTON BAND CONTEST

♦By Telegraph—Press Association. ASHBURTON, October 8. A three days' band contest, under the auspices of the Canterbury Second-Class Band Contest Association, was commenced at Ashburton, this morning, and will be continued until Thursday. Eight bands are competing, namely, Nelson Citizens, Ly*telton Marine, Invercargill Young Men's Christian Association, WaiMarine, Elite (Christchurch), Ashburton County, and Ashburton Temperance. A procession, garden party, and sports were held to-day, when the visitors were formally welcomed. The results to date are : E-flat Bass solo.—Arthur Bath, Invercargill, 1; A. Scrimgeour, Elite 2; J. Childs, Lyttelton, 3. B-flat Bass.—H. Anthony, Ashburton Temperance, 1; J. Barrett, Nelson, 2. E-fiat Cornet.—J. E. C. Thomas, Ashburton County, 1; F. Dix, Lyttelton, 2; A. C. F. Hosden, Ashburton Temperance, 3. Tenor Trombone.—J. Cummins. Nelson, 1; M. Wearne, Lyttelton, 2. B flat Cornet.—E. Sullivan, Lyttelton, 1; W. Taylor, Timaru, 2; C. Gass, Ashburton County, 3. Fourteen competed. Quartettes.—Ashburton County, 1; Timaru Marine, 2; Nelson Citizens, 3. Nine competed. Lieut. Herd, of Wellington, is adjudicator.
