' Wheat—Two cargoes of Australian sold at 40s IOJd and 42s 6d respectively; 20,000 quarters of "Victorian September-October-November shipment at 41s 6d. The sheepskin auctions will be held on January 16th, March 12th, May 7th, June 25th, July 30th, September 10th, October 22nd, and December 17th. Rabbits—Prices firm. Home supplies are short. The Frozen Meat Trade Association's Smithfield market quotations for the undermentioned classes of frozen meat are based on actual sales of not less than 100 carcases of mutton or lamb or .25 carcases of beef of fair average quality. These quotations are not for selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now in the market: —Frozen mutton, Canterbury light, 48 to 561b, 4 l-16d; "saedium, 56 to 641b, 4d; heavy, 64 to 721b, 3|d; North Island, 55 to 651b, 3 9-1 Gd; best brands, 3 11-16 d. New Zealand lambs Canterbury heavy, 63 to 421b, 4£d; other sorts unchanged. .New Zealand beef: Ox fores, 180 to 2201b, 2gd; ox hinds, 180 to 2201b, 3§d. River Plate sheep unchanged. River Plate beef—Ox fores, 2Jd; ox hinds, 3|d.
Wool —At the sales just closed 94,600 bales sold, the Home market taking 48,500, Continental 33,000, American 2,000, and 7,500 were held over. Compared with July sales merinos closed -at 10 to 124 per cent, higher, fine crossbreds 5 to I\, and coarse 5 per cent, higher. Medium are unchanged. Merino lambs are from 5 to 10 per cent., and crossbreds a penny higher. Gear cliD sold at ll|d. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. WELLINGTON, October 7. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, October sth : The mutton market is slightly weaker, and there is less demand. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 3£d per lb; North Island, 3§d per lb. There is goqd demand for prime quality lamt>. Canterbury, s|d; ether than Canterbury, 5Jd. The beef market is dull, and supplies of American chilled beef are large. Hindquarters, 3|d; forequarters, 2gd.
The butter market, is very firm, with a better demand, and supplies decreasing. The following are current quotations:—Australian 112s, saltless 2s premium over this figure; Danish, 117s; Siberian, 100s per cwfc.
The cheese market remains firm. Canadian white is quoted at 61s; coloured, 62s per cwt.
The hemp market is 'quiet, and prices are slightly weaker. Good fair on the spot, £32; fair grade, in the same position, £29; OctoberDecember shipments, fair grade, &2K 10s.
seed. --The raa v ket is very firm, and buyers are offering more freely. Bright, clean, New Zealand, weighing 171b of seed to the bushel, 68s.
The hop market is firm. The crop is much below the average, and .prices are rising. The present price ■of hop= is £5 5s per cwt.
