FIRE AT HASTINGS.

By Telegraph—Press Association. HASTINGS, October 7. Owing to a defective chimney, an eleven-roomed, two-storied residence, A owned and occupied by Dr. R. Nairn, near the racecourse, was ■ totally destroyed by fire on Sunday at 4P& a.m. The doctor was awakened by a noise as of bottles breaking, and found a cupboard on fire near the chimney in the kitchen. Hastily arousing the family, he rang up the telephone exchange, but 35 minutes elapsed before the brigade had the hose on. The occupants had a narrow escape. Valuable silver and furniture were destroyed. Only tlie surgical instruments were saved. ihe insurances are all in the London and Lancashire office. There was £1,250 on the house and £1,250 on the furniture.
