Time, lmin 54Jsec. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. Mooltan 1 Apologue 2 Melodrama 3 All the acceptors but lolaire, Delaware, Barrinjoey, Legation and Tregere started. Betting—s to 4 against Mooltan, 4 to 1 Apologue, 25 to 1 Maranui. After the field had settled down Mary of Argyle rushed to the front, and had as her closest attendants Collarit.Buddah, Apologue, Florance, Melodrama and Mooltan. There was little change in the relative positions until approaching the straight, when Collarit ran up to the leader, who led into the straight. Once heads W3re turned for home the favourite with' Apologue drew away from the others, and fought out a desperate finish, the former winnii.g by a short head. Maranui was sixth. Time, 2min 34JsfcC Steeplechase. Phaetonitis 1, Eclair 2, Haydn 3. Nine started. Betting—2 to 1 Phaetonitis, 6 to 1 Haydn and Eclair. The New Zealanders bad the race to themselves, clearing right away from the field. On the final run down the hill Eclair had a long lead, and it looked as if the top weight would never get on terms With him, but on the flat Phaetonitis came with a " wet'sail," and won by four lengths. Six lengths between second and third.- The race was conceded to be the finest steeplechase seen on the course. All the New Zealanders jumped splendidly. Time, smin 33se'c. Breeders' Plate.—Bawbee 1, Armlet 2. isorodino 3. Fourteen started. Betting—2 to 1 Borodino, 4 to 1 Armlet, 6to 1 Bawbee. Armlet was well away, but gave place to Maltose. At the three furlongs post Annlst again took_up the running with Ale and Borodino next, and enured the straight two lengths to the good. Borodino challenges! her, and the pair were struggling for supremacy when Bawbee came with a rattle and won. by half a length. Borodino a head away. Time, lmin 3S3C. Received October 7, 12.15 p.m. FLEMINGTON, October 7. Subterranean is now favourite for the Melbourne Cup, and is also in strong demand for the Caulfield Cup. Solution is reported to be amiss. Received October 7, 8.43 p.m. • MELBOURNE, October 7. There is little or no betting over the forthcoming race meetings owing to the absence of bookmakers at the A.J.C. meeting. The'nominal quotations for the Caulfield Cup are as follow:—5 to 1 Poseidon, 7to 1 Subterranean, 12 to 1 Yabba Gabba, 14 to 1 Bendigo and Ebullition. Consequent on their running in Sydney, Mooltan and Mountain King have come" into favour for the Melbourne Cup, Mooltan's Metropolitan win causing him to be installed as favourite at 8 to 1, while Mountain King is quoted at 10 to 1, tnd Subterranean at 12 to 1.
