A CINGALESE SENTENCED TO DEATH. Received October 7, 9.39 a.m. PERTH, October 7. The Cingalese Kitchilan was sentenced to death for the murder of Miss Fouracies on August 16th. (The body of Miss Fouracies, partially consumed, was found in a house, and letters, also partly burnt, revealed its identity.) ! NEWCASTLE COAL. Received October 7, 9.37 a.m. NEWCASTLE, October 7. For the past nine months, coal ex-poi-ts were over 400,000 tons greater than for the corresponding period of last year. • ANOTHER CASE OF PLAGUE. Received October 7, 9.27 a.m. BRISBANE, October 7. Another case of plague is reported at Cairns. EIGHT HOURS' DAY PROCESSION. Received October 8, 12.43 a.m. SYDNEY, October 7. Rain in the early part of the day somewhat marred the effect of the Eight-hours' Day procession. There was an excellent display of banners and trade emblems. • Fifty-four societies participated in the procession. Large crowds lined the streets. The sports at the Agricultural Grounds were largely attended. Horder won the principal event — the Eight-hour Wheel Race. NEW INDUSTRY. Received October 8, 1.5 a.m. MELBOURNE. October 7. Colonel Stanley, the Australian representative of the Armstrong, Whitworth Company, has selected a site, subject to the approval of the Company, at Altona Bay, where they propose to establish shipbuilding works. Colonel Stanley states that the Company are desirous of becoming the pioneers of the industry in Australia, and intend to send out a staff of superintendents and expert workmen who will train operatives here. Colonel Stanley interviewed the Federal Minister of Defence on the question of building torpedoera and destroyers for the Commonwealth. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. WHEN LABOUR'S TIME COMES. Received October 7, 9.37 a.m. SYDNEY, October 7. Sir William Lyne, Federal Treasurer, speaking at the Eight-hour banquet declared that people would find when the time came for a Labour Government to take the reins of power there would be no need to fear for the future of the country.
