The Masterton Racing Club is to be congratulated on the response ' made by owners for the; meeting to be held on 24th and 25th inst. For fifteen events there are no less than 319 entries, an average of over 21 throughout. The nominations are from various districts. Wellington, Manawatu, Rangitikei, Hawke's Bay and Taranaki are well represented, while a Canterbury - owned candidate also figures in the list. The meeting should be one of the most successful yet held by the club, and as the tracks are in splendid order some fine racing should be witnessed. The weights for the Wellington meeting are published this morning. To a certain extent the handicapper has had recent form to guide him in making his adjustments, and good acceptances should- therefore be received by the club. Playmate lOst 91b, Royal Blue 9st 51b, and Black Squall 9st read well in the Hack Hurdles, of one mile and thretquarters. In the Shorts Handicap fyfct horses like Contender, St. Claimer, Muskerry, Waihuka, All Red, Eona, Splendid Idea, Toa Tuhi, and Kareroa may line up before the starter, and the race should be one to bring out the brilliancy of the fittest on the day. Of the Rimutaka Hack Handicap entrants, Dawn Bst slb, Warlock Bst 41b, Saga Bst 21b are perhaps the pick ot the handicap, unless Martyrium 9st should be in her best form. The Racing Club Handicap, of one mile and a quarter, will aive the racing public an opportunity of seeing several New Zealand Cup candidates with the colours up, previous to going South to do their finishing gallops for the big event of the Dominion. Grand Slam, Aeolus, Elevation, Seaman,; Glenullin, Mystification, St. Joe, Downfall, Gazeley, and Saga, are all New Zealand Cup entrants. Of these Elevation is the only one that could win without having to carry a penalty at Riccarton, consequently the winner may come 1 from among those not engaged at the Canterbury meeting. Grand Slam, Elevation, Seaman, and Glenullin might be found fighting the issue, but a better idea will be gained when the acceptances come to hand. On recent form Gold Crest, Bst 121b, looks well in the Flying Handicap, of six furlongs, the best of the others at the weights being St. Claimer Bst 101b, Muskerry Bat 31b, Eona 7st 131b and Splendid Idea 7st 91b. The top weight in the New Zealand Cup, Maniapoto, has been allotted lOst 51b in the Wainui Handicap, of seven furlongs. He is reported to be big in condition, and may not, therefore, do himself justice. Seaman 9st 51b, Swimming Belt Bst 91b, Martyrium Bst 71b, Flotilla Bst 51b. and The Stake Bst 51b should ran well; and in-a true run race Seaman would most likely be hailed the winner. A fine lot of speedy hacks are engaged in the Flying Hack, of five furlongs, and until the entry of 23 is reduced at acceptance time it would not be easy to indicate a prob- | able winner. Tupono, Dawn, Warlock, Strathcona, Golden Eagle, KaI reroa, and Ney have proved to be exceptionally speedy over the disj tance, and the fittest in the matter of condition should fight out the finish. Sardonyx broke down at the W«mganui meeting, but is expected to be on the tracks again before the ssason has far advanced. One firm of Wellington bookmakers quotes Elevation at 4 to 1 for the New Zealand Cup. At this rate it need not fear a great influx of money, as the majority of backers would prefer to wait for the eventful day before accepting such generous odds. Maniapoto made his re-appearance at the War.ganui meeting after a spell of nearly two years. He started in the Marangai Handicap, and finished fourth. Many good judges ever that he is too big to be got ready for the big race, while others consider he is improving every day.
