LOANS TO LOCAL BODIES.

During the financial year ended March 31st, 1907, local bodies in the colony applied for loans under tne Local Bodies' Loans Acts, totalling £283,123. Of this sum county applications amounted to £178,198, out of which £24,241 was refuse'd

owing- to non-compliance with the ; terms of the Act. In addition to this an application of one county for £13,000 was rejected at the poll of ratepayers. Includeri in the amounts provisionally granted was a sum of | £3,000 for providing the suburb of Lansdowne with a high-pressure water-service; the loan is, however, entered in the Treasurer's return presented to Parliament as uncompleted. Out of a total of £5,950 applied for by the Masterton County only £9OO for constructing a bridge over the Taueru River on the Te Ore Ore—Bideford Road was completed during the year. In Wairarapa South County out of £1,299 applied for £650 was refused as not being in compliance with the Act. This sum was for widening the formation of and metalling part of Dalefield Road. Applications for loan 3 from Road Boards amounted to £27,146, of which £5,000 was refused by the Government, and £1,500 was rejected at the poll. Borough Council applications for the financial year totalled £36,780, of which £13,600 was refused. Included in the refusals was a loan, applied for by the Greytown Borough Council of £2,000 for erecting and furnishing a Town Hall. The reason given for refusal is "not in compliance with terms ofAr;t." Town Boards applied fbr £3,470, and £2,700 of this was refused, including applicaions from the Eketahuna Town Board (since created a Borough) for £9OO for street improvements, and £1,200 for drainage; not being in compliance with the terms of tho Act. River Boards applied for £16,500, which was all granted. |Drainagß Boards applied for £21,029, out of which £6,000 was rejected at the poll in the Manawatu Land Drainage district. The remainder of the applications were successful.
