MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
MASTERTON—FRIDAY. (Before Mr W. P. James, S.M.) Alexander Smith was charged with having procured liquor for Mary Eelliher, knowing her to be prohiJaitedhMAccused, who was represented by! Mr P. L. Hollings, pleaded guilty. Sergeant Miller deposed to visiting Mrs Kelliher's house on September 30th, and finding defendant sitting at a tab© .with the woman, in front of whom was a bottle of boer. He said defendant was well aware that Mrs Kelliher was prohibited. Mr Hollings, while admitting that there was little to be said in extcnution of the offence, asked his Worship to consider that some people were often led to break the law by motives of sympathy, more especially .in regard to eases like the present one. The Magistrate aaid he could see no excuse for the accused's act. A fine u£ £5 with 12s costs, in default 14 days' imprisonment, would be imposed. A week was allowed in which to pay the line. Mary Kelliher was then charged with having procured liquor during she currency of a prohibition order against her. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined £2 and 7s costs, in default seven days' imprisonment. Mary McGuiken, an elderly woman, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, and having insufficient lawful means of support. Accused denied the charge, but the Magistrate, after hearing the evidence of the police, sentenced accused to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. The Inspector of Factories proceeded against Wong Way Kee for transacting business after the statute ary closing hours. A fine of 10s with 7s costs was imposed. A similar charge was preferred against Hugh R6a. The Inspector said that defendant had previously been convicted for a similar offence, and the Department wished to suppress illicit trading.. ~A fine of £2 with 7s costs was in Jpßed.
