MARYLEBONE CRICKET TEAM'S TOUR.
NOT A FINANCIAL SUCCESS,
The committee which controlled the tour of the Marylebone Cricket Club through the Dominion, in presenting its report, stated that it regretted that the tour was not a financial success. The programme comprised sixteen matches, including two test matches against New Zealand representative teams, and the total receipts from all the matches amounted to £1,579 9s 9d, and from sundry sources £9O 7s 4d, making an aggregate amount of £1,669 17s Id, a sum far short of the least sanguine expectations of the committee. When the tour was projected it was confidently hoped that the New Zealand International Exhibition, which was being held at Christchurch during the progress of the tour, would largely conduce to its financial success, but so far as the matches played in Christchurch were concerned, it appeared to have had a contrary effect. But, whilst the Exhibition acted detrimentally upon the matches played in Christchurch, it could not be held responsible for the unsatisfactory results disclosed by the statement of receipts a'xl expenditure for the matches played in the other centres of the Dominion. Reviewing the whole tour, the first match played against Wellington could alone be considered to have been a financial success. The total guarantees received from the council and the affiliated associations amounted to £2,850, making the total receipts £4,519 17s Id, whilst the total expenditure upon the tour amounted to £2,619 17s Id. There was a balance in hand of £1,899 10s, which the committee recommended should be refunded to the guarantors in the proportion of their respective guarantees.
