CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held in Messrs Abraham and Williams' farmers loom, yesterday afternoon, when there were present —Messrs J. D. Cruickshank (chairman), T. G. Mason, G. O. Summerell, F. W. Carey, B. J. Dolan, and J. B. Moodie. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. E. Chamberlain, W. B. Chennells, C. Graham, J. B. Keith and H. C. Robinson. The Treasurer's report showed a credit balance of £2l 13s 2d. Mr H. P. Wynn-Williams was elected a member of the Chamber.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of membsrs was held subsequently. Mr J: D. Cruickshank (President) presided, and there were also present —Messrs T. G. Mason, G. C. Sumnierell, B. J. Dolan, Donald Donald, F. W. Carey, E. H. Waddington, J. B. Moodie, J. C. Ewington, F. Whitton and M. Caselberg. The report and balance sheet-were taken as read. The latter showed a credit balance of £55 ISs 2d. In moving'the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the Chairman remarked that during the last twelve months the district had reaped the benefit of good times, and prices had been higher than they had been for the past ten years. Land continued to keep up in price, and the demand was greater than the supply. In conclusion, he thanked the members of the Council for the assistance had given him during his term as President of the Chamber. Mr G. C. Summerell seconded the motion. "If the Chamber is not representative of the business interests of the town," said Mr Summerell, "it is no fault of ours, as it is open to all business men to become members." Taking everything into consideration, he thought the Chamber had justified its existence. He would suggest that a canvassing committee be appointed to obtain new members. Mr B. J. Dolan supported Mr Summerell's suggestion v in reference to a canvassing committee. He thought the statements contained in the report were sufficient reply to those who had "twitted" them with not being in touch with the business people of the town. The fact that they had obtained telephonic communication with Wellington was sufficient justification for their existence.

The motion was then put to the meeting and carried. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, MrT. G. Mason; Vice-Presi-dent, Mr G. C. Summerell; Council, Messrs J. D. Cruickshank, F. W. Carey, M. Caselberg, E. E. Chamberlain, W. B. Chennells, C. E. Daniell, B.J. Dolan, Donald Donald, Thos. Wagg, J. C. Ewington, C. Graham, J. B. Keith, J. B. Moodie, E. H. Waddington and H. C. Robinson; Auditor, Mr W. B. Chennells. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Dolan, seconded by Mr Mason, that Messrs Cruickshank, Summerell and the mover be appointed a commutes to canvass the town for new members. Mr Donald brought up the matter of tha northern approach, and said he hope ] that the incoming Council would suggest something to remedy the present state of affairs. Mr Ewington said that the Borough Council, had appointed a committee to confer with the Chamber on the matter. Messrs Mason and Donald were appointed a committee to meet the Borough Council committee and discuss the matter. A of thanks to the retiring President and other officers concluded the meeting.
