EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS.

Smart "shocks of earthquake, were felt in various parts of the district at 4.30 o'clock thismorningv Locally the direction appeared to, be; north and south, but the record taken at Turua, seven miles from Thames, showed the direction to be north-east and south-west. There were three distinct shocks, the second being the most severe treaor. Pictures and crockery rocked and buildings were shaken severely. Many residents were awakened from sleep. One building of two storeys rocked violently, but no damage was caused. The third and final tremor was about equal in force of the first shock, and was also felt at Waihi and Paeroa.
