MAURICEVILLE WEST.
(From a Correspondent.) Tuesday. La3t night the .residents tendered a farewell social to Mr and Mrs E. H. Ward on the eve of their departure for Wellington, where Mr Ward is taking up the position of first assistant at the Newtown District High School. On behalf of the residents, Mr William Jessen presented Mrs Ward with a silver toa service suitably inscribed, and Mr Ward with a handsome silver-mounted pipe. Mr Jessen spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Ward's capabilities as a teacher, and expressed the hope that he would have a successful career, and would soon reach" the highest position possible under the Wellington Education Board. Mr Ward feelingly replied, and thanked the residents for their handsome gifts and expressions of goodwill towards himself and Mrs Ward. During the evening songs were sung by Mr and Mrs Ward and Mr W. Jensen. Dar.cing was indulged in till past midnight. The gathering was brought to a conclusion with the singing of" Auld Lang Syne." Mr F. L. Combs has been appointed *- successor to Mr Ward, but will not take up his duties till November Ist. In the meantime a relieving teacher has been appointed.
