Eeeeived September 23, 11.30 p.m. 1 BRISBANE, September 23. Miss Young, of the South Seas Evangelical Mission, from the Island of Malaita, brings tidings of several murders during the past iew months. At MaJu last month one of the mission teachers was fatally shot by unchristian natives. Ten days before Miss Young visited Malu, a native man and woman., who had returned from Australia, were also murdered. Threats were made to kill other teachers, and even white missionaries. Murders had also taken place within the last three months at Tarracian and Simarango. At the latter place no fewer than six murders had been committedMiss Young describes it as monstrous sending back to the islands men and women who were deprived of means of defending themselves against armed natives.

COAL LUMPERS' STRIKE. REFUSAL TO WORK WITH NONUNIONISTS. Received September 23, 11.3 p.m. SYDNEY, September 23. The unionist coal lumpers have struck on the steamer Orient and the French steamer Oceanien against working along with non-unionists. They declined to resume work until the non-unionists were sent away. The non-unionists claim that this policy of. the unionists has been crushing them out, and has been pursued ever since the strike commenced. The officials of the Coal Lumpers' Union disclaim any concerted action on the part of the union. DUTY ON WHITE PINE. Received September 23, 10.20 a m. MELBOURNE; September 23. A notification has been published in the Commonwealth Gazette to the effect that a drawback duty wili be allowed on New Zealand pine used in the making of butter-boxes. A FATAL FIRE. Received September 24, 1.14 a m. SYDNEY. September 23. A fatal fire occurred in a house at Warren tc-day. It started from an incubator. Two children were burned to death. A third, a boy of nine years of age, after heroic efforts to rescue the others, succumbed to his injuries. The father of the children was badly burned.
