CARTERTON.

Saturday. * InM% is very prevalent here just now. The liev. T. G. Hammond,"superintendent to the Maori. Mi:sion, delivered a lecture in the Methodist Church on Friday evening, and described the work of the mission and the customs and ways of the natives. His address proved very interesting .and instructive,, and at the conclusion of his remarks Mr Hammond was .accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of the Rev. W. J. Elliott. Several very fine anthems were rendered by the choir during the evening At a meeting of the Carterton Thursday Cricket Club, held on Friday evening, the following officers •were elected for the ensuing year. — Patron, Mr W. C. Buchanan; President, Mr W. Moore; Vice-Presidents, JMessrs J. Brown. A. Booth, A. GalJon, F. Feist, J. A. Dudson and W. Holley. Secretary and .Treasurer, Mr H. Hart. Sunday. A meeting cf the Stewards of the Taratahi -Carterton Racing Club was held .in the Secretary's rooms, High Street, on Saturday afternoon. There were present: —Messrs G. W. Dellar (chairman), J. Hadder J. G. Oates, L. Nix, T. Kay, T. P. Firman and J. M. Lightfoot. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs McPhee and Denbee. It was decided to engage the Carterton Brass Band to play at the annual meeting- Two new members iwere elected. Mr Ames' tender to worlc the totalisator at the meeting was accepted. T. H. Timins iwas recommended for a jockey's license. A vote of thanks was accorded to M*r Hodder for tfee use of his dray fox work done on the course. Accounts amounting to £23 7s lOd were passed for payment. The funeral of the late Miss Lorna Berrill took place to-day. The cortege was a large and included over 200 children of the Carterton District High School. At St. Mary's Church, at 11 a.m., a solemn requiem Mass was held by the Rev. Father Cahill. The funeral left the Church at 2.30 p.m. The services at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. Father Cahill, assisted by the Very Rev. Dean McKenna, of Masterton. A very large number of wreaths were sent by friends of the deceased, including a beautiful floral emblem from the girls attending the High School.
