The town of Roma, Queensland, is the scene of a strange phenomenon. Several years ago a bore was put down several hundred feet in search of artesian water, but of water a supply of gas of high illuminating quality was struck. For over two years no use was made of the gas, which was apparently inexhaustible in quantity. A loan was then raised, a gasometer constructed, the town was reticulated, and business premises and private houses were connected with the mains, tor a time everything went well, and the gas was largely availed of for both illuminating and heating purposes. Suddenly the supply failed, and Roma returned to the use of kerosene and firewood. All efforts to restore the supply proved futile, but now, after the lapse of a year or more, the gas has again appeared, and it is hoped that the supply will prove permanent.
