CHRISTCHURCH, September 19.
An inquest was held at Lyttelton, yesterday, on the body of John Jeremiah Sullivan, a little boy who fell off the Gladstone Pier into the harbour, and was got out by J. A. Corrie, a platelayer who was working close by. Evidence was given that about 3.35 p.m. the boy came up from underneath the wharf with a can of jellyfish. After playing about for some time he went to the edge of the wharf to throw the jellyfish into the water. Some time after one of the men heard a splash, and going to the edge of the wharf, saw the boy in the water. He called to Corrie, who jumped in and held the boy up until a rope was lowered, and he was got on to the wharf. Witness and his mates took measures to restore respiration, and the boy recovered sufficiently to be able to walk. Dr. C. H. Upham stated that he was called about 4.45 p.m. to attend the boy and fourd him breathing very faintly and almost pulseless. He applied the usual restoratives and stayed for about an hour. He made two other visits during the evening. The boy regained consciousness, but about 9.30 p.m. he received a message to say that the boy was dead. In his opinion death was due to exhaustion.
The jury returned a verdict to that effect, and added a rider expressing appreciation of Corrie's plucky action in jumping iuto the water and getting the boy out.
