A FIERCE ENCOUNTER.
CHINESE REBELS ATTACK TROOPS. Received September 17,.8.28 a.m.. '..'"..', ]"'.[ ,PEKIN„ September 16. A fierce encounter between the Imperial troops and a party of rebels is reported. It appears that the rebels, who were armed with modern weapons, were led by emigrants returning from the Straits Settlements (where a large number of Chinese are employed) and Annam. The fight took place at Lingshuan, and lasted for twelve hours. The Imperial troops available could not, evidently, overcome' the rebels, and reinforcements of soldiers from Kwangsi, which is some sixty miles distant from the scene of the fight, had to be requisitioned. The town was Eventually relieved.
