While driving Queen Margherita over the Jara Mountains in a motor car, the chauffeur, in order to avoid colliding with a peasant's cart, swerved sharply, and escaped going over a precipice by a few inches. RUSSIAN EMIGRANTS. Received September 16, 10.48 p.m. ST. PETERSBURG, September 16. Half a million Russian emigrants have proceeded to Siberia already this year. Two hundred thousand Russian Jews emigrated to the United States alone in lyo6. IRISH AFFAIRS. Received September 16, 10.55 p.m LONDON, September 16. The. Hon. John Gavin Duffy, one of the late Sir Gavin Duffy's sons, interviewed by Ihe Westminster Gazette, states that the Sinn Fein desires to build up Ireland from within, and recognises that a physical force policy is not feasible. It aims at obtaining a repeal of the Union, and wants two separate parliaments under one King, and hopes to induce the Nationalists to withdraw from Westminster, where their presence is useless. Meanwhile a National Assembly of 300 members will meet at Dublin to advise the County Councils, to found and control a national stock exchange, organise a voluntary protection policy, and establish a national consular service. He believes that Ireland and the United States will subscribe £50,000 a year.
RAILWAY SERVANTS. Received September 16, 10.55 p.m. LONDON, Sepsmber 16. Mr Richard Bell, Liberal M.P. for Derby, addressing 2,500 railway men at Manchester, said that the Executive of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants had decided to refer the question of a strike to a ballot in October, giving the railway directors a final chance to concede the men's claims, including the right to appoint representatives to negotiate. The meeting concurred with this decision. The railway men at Crewe, Derby, Swindon, Peterborough, Bradford, Cardiff, Southport, and elsewhere resolved to support the Executive. OBITUARY. Received September 16, 10.55 p.m. LONDON. September 16. The death has occurred of the Hon. Henry Lloyd Gibbs, youngest s;>n of the late Lord Aldenham. (The deceased was born in London on July 21st. 1861, and was a partner in the firm of Antony. Gibbs and Sons). WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY, Received September 16, 8.34 a.m. LONDON, September 15. Signor Marconi has sailed for Canada to complete the wireless connection between Cape Breton and England under an agreement with ths Canadian Government. It is proposed to charge 5d per word for ordinary messages and 2Jd per word for press messages. RECORD SUBMARINE RUN. Received September 16, 7.50 a.m. PARIS, September 15. The new French submarine Opale, during a trial trip, made a record submarine run. (The Opale is of 390 tons, and was designed by M. Maugas).
