IN THE INTERESTS OF THE UNIONS.
By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, September 16. Speaking at the dinner of .the Bookbinders and Paper-rulers' Society, to-night, the Hon. J. A. Millar referred to the proposed amendments to the Arbitration Act. He had been urged by the members of Unions to legislate on the lines of the Victorian Wages .Boards, but had refused, as they did not recognise unions, whereas in the Government proposals it was the Unions who would nominate representatives in the Industrial Councils. He was sorry that certain manifestos had been published broadcast prejudicing the Bill in the eyes of the public, because he was now daily receiving communications from Unions in the country in favour of the Bill. He had been condemned wholesale, yet he had done" nothing that was not in the interests of the Unions.
