WELLINGTON. September 12. I Consideration of the tariff was resumed in Committee of the Whole by the House of Representatives this afternoon. The Hon. J. A. Millar accepted an amendment proposed by Mr W. F. Massey to place insecticides (20 per cent.) on the free list for agricultural uses or tree washt s. The Minister also accept' d an amendment proposed by Mr F. W. Lang to place tanners' inks or stairs on the free list. On the motion of the Minister of Customs, pictures, itituary, and works of art, whether purchased under bond or imported for display in any public park or place under the conditions prescribed by the Minister, were placed on the free list. Mr W. F. Massey moved to place al machines and implements for agrij cultural purposes on the free list, but was unsuccessful. I The House adjourned at 5.30 p.m. In the House in the evening, at the item dairying machinery, including ] cream separators and also coolers Cfree list). Mr Massey moved to add the words "milking machines and all narts thereof." In reply to the Hon. T. Y. Duncan, who asked if it was intended to taxvacuum pumps, if they came m attached to dairying machines, the Hon. J. A. Millar said that vacuum pumps were . used for various purposes, and if a farmer chose to import a machine and pump together he must pay the duty on the pump. The amendment was negatived by 33 votes to 32. Mr F. Mandev wanted to place a patent automatic cream separator on the free list, but was defeated. The Hon. A. R. Guinness, in order to give effect to his previous amendment abolishing the duty on miningmachinery, moved that it be placed on the free list. The Hon. J. A. Millar said that t' e -committee should restore the item to the original 5 per cent. list. The amendment was lost by 34 to 22.
